Scientific or graphing calculator? What students should buy?
As your children grow older the school supply list might be shorter, but it's not always cheaper.
One thing that could cause sticker shock to parents of high and middle school students is a specific calculator. A majority of schools prefer that students possess their own hand-held scientific calculator. In the highest level math classes like AP Calculus for example, a graphing calculator may be required.
What's the difference? Scientific calculators perform functions beyond subtraction, addition, multiplication and division. A scientific calculator typically has specific buttons for parentheses trigonometric function, exponents reverses, and pi in addition to many other things.
A graphing calculator does even more. It'll have a larger screen, allowing you to type in a specific function, then display a graph of it.
Best to Buy's Geek Squad agent Derek Meister states that scientific calculatorscan run between $10 and $60. Graphing calculators generally cost even higher, with prices ranging between $80 to $150.Should the students returning to school buy technological or graphing calculators? (KOMO News)
But, Best Buy says you don't necessarily need to purchase one. Best Buy suggests seeking advice from your school before you buy.
Harmony Weinberg, Edmonds School District's media and public relations supervisor Harmony Weinberg, Edmonds School District's media and public relations supervisor, tell KOMO News each individual school decides on its own rules.
"For higher level classes, like AP Calculus, it is often expected that students have a handheld graphing calculator, such as TI-83, TI-84 or TI-89."
Calculators of this type are good for AP testing. Weinberg also says schools have a procedure in place for students to check out calculators like they do texts if they are unable to or do not want to purchase their own.
For the Edmonds school district calculators are used in the same way as textbooks, in the sense of damage or loss, however they there is no charge to use.
Another possibility could be in their school-issued laptop. Weinberg states that there is a provision in Edmonds "all students have access to scientific and graphing calculators through their district-issued Chromebook." The district encourages teachers to use Desmos online calculators, as these can be used in state-wide tests too.

SEATTLE A family from West Seattle say their young son was told to stay home when his contact with one who was positive for COVID-19. This prompted his family members to say that he was singled out and was treated differently by school district officials because the boy was not vaccinated..
In the last week, the 12 year old student from Denny International Middle School was confronted by a fellow student who was diagnosed with COVID-19.
School officials advised the student to stay at home for two weeks due to the fact that there was no vaccination.
His relatives said they have discovered that, had he been vaccinated the 7th grader would not have been forced to miss classes as it was as long as he did not show symptoms of the virus.
"My kid has no symptoms," stated Jeremy Gollyhorn, the boy's father. "He's completely healthy. Why is it that he doesn't get positive COVID results and go back to school?"
Gollyhorn told reporters that his son was being placed under a different set of standards that students who've had their shots. Even in the event that he failed a COVID-19 test, he wouldn't be allowed back to school until the quarantine period of two weeks is complete.
However, those close to them who are fully vaccinated with no symptoms are not required to stay in quarantine. They can go back to school, however they should be tested three-to-five days later to ensure.
Gollyhorn stated that it doesn't make sense.
"Vaccinated people can still spread COVID too so what's the difference there?" said the doctor. declared.
A spokesperson confirmed that Seattle Public Schools is following the health guidelines of public schools set by the state.
Gollyhorn said the policy strips people of their choices. He said his family doesn't trust the vaccines and such situations only make him want to challenge the government.
From the time Seattle Public Schools started the school year on Sept. 1, the district has reported 117 positive COVID-19 cases and Denny International Middle School has had four positive cases reported in the same time.
It's not clear how many staff and students have been told to remain in quarantine because of exposures. But, these absences are considered excused.
